Creating a glossary or dictionary of your organizations specific terminology is the key to delivering the best possible quality of translation, whether this is human translation or machine translation. The following table shows the type of translation that we deliver cross referenced to the type of dictionary that is recommended:

 Type of Translation Glossary Dictionaries
 TER Translation Recommended
 Profesional Translation Recommended
 Full Post Edited Translation   Required
 Enhanced Machine Translation   Required

Glossaries are usually created in conjunction with yourselves. Typically consisting of up to 200 terms and 500 DNT's, they consist of meta data derived from your website or terms that you supply and a list of Do Not Translate terms specified by you in a spreadsheet. These are processed, uploaded onto our translation platform, compiled and published for use by Translution Localization Manager, Translution DB Manager, Translution Business and Translution MT API.

Dictionaries are much larger and created from your own data using statistical and specialist linguistic tools.

This data can be anything that is relevant to your business, for instance, operations manuals, quality manuals, product information, contracts, contacts, standard proposals, correspondence, your website etc.

Our experience shows that a statistical approach is the most comprehensive and cost effective way to rapidly build your organization's specific terminology. Typical sizes of dictionaries created are between 1000 and 3000 terms.

Once built, your dictionaries provide you with a key business resource that has many uses in addition to improving machine translation quality. Examples are in improving consistency of authoring tasks, improving the accuracy of human translation and helping with the induction of new employees.

We recommend that you invest in creating a dictionary when one or more of the following applies.

  • You have licensed Translution Business or Translution API and wish to improve the quality of the machine translation.
  • You have licensed Translution Localization Manager for use by your own teams of translators and wish to improve the productivity of your translators.
  • You have a requirement for large amounts of translation over a period (typically in excess of 50,000 source words).

The initial dictionary creation process typically takes between 3 and 6 weeks and consists of 4 distinct stages as follows:

Stage 1 Collect the source data

Translution creates a corpus of mono–lingual data derived from your existing electronic documents and databases. Source documents are normally uploaded by you onto our FTP servers under a confidentiality agreement. Source data is destroyed once the dictionary has been created.

Stage 2 Identify source language terms

Translution extract the base form (for example - the singular form) of terms from the corpus using a range of specialist processes and software tools. This produces a spreadsheet of valid terms such as nouns, proper nouns, compound terms and acronyms suitable for reviewing.

Stage 3 Dictionary creation

Once reviewed and approved by you, source terms are translated into the target languages by specialist terminologists to create a multi lingual dictionary. The dictionary is then published.

Stage 4 Update the Dictionary

Once your initial dictionary has been created, it is continually checked and updated by translators as they post edit the enhanced machine translation. Translution's translators are also trained to add new source and target language terms to the dictionary as they come across them.
